Wait, wait. I'm confused, why is there TVNZ Ondemand, when there's YouTVNZTube?

Because TVNZ's idea is to make their content available on all platforms where people want to watch it. It makes sense as long as they are clipping the ticket along the way.

That must be why the first iteration of TVNZ Ondemand only worked in Windows. Because they care about the user :)

Did anyone else attend the Great Blend where they discussed OnDemand shortly before its launch?

Any one know who did the ondemand website?

From the FAQs on tvnzondemand site:
Can I play shows if I live outside of New Zealand?
Answer - No. The shows have licence rights cleared only for within New Zealand.

But, guess what. I can get YouTube here in the UK.

What I want to know is, what's the point in blocking tvnzondemand to people outside NZ. Now that "some" of the content is on YouTube. Especial if they are homesick kiwis who want to watch Eating Media Lunch and Highlights of the 1950 NZ Maori v British Lions rugby match at Athletic Park?

Confused? TVNZ on YouTube? It seems pretty simple to me... be where the users are...

I'm sure TVNZ would have love to offer all media to all platforms all over the world. Sadly, I suspect in reality things are a lot more complicated than simply not caring about the user, or not understanding the technology.

DRM/licensing is currently a reality for most media bodies taking content online. Does the fact that Apple don't offer music we can't play on anything other than on iPod/iTunes irk us as much?

James, in your experience is the FAQ telling the truth? Are you unable to watch *any* content on ondemand? Flash or WM? I wondered if maybe it was for certain content they don't have rights for distribution outside NZ, and the FAQ might not be entirely accurate.

TVNZ don't have rights to certain content outside of NZ - thats a reality of modern media creation and broadcasting, but that doesn't mean that they have to everything into potentially DRM'd Windows Media Player for NZ viewers only. Apple now has "iTunes plus" (non-DRM'd mp3s) and 'regional' stores, this could have been an option for TVNZ to look at.

I understand YouTube is launching some kind of regional setting ability sometime soon, but that's beside the point.

What I'm interested in is, why potentially dilute the just released TVNZOnDemand brand with a YouTube channel? What are the differences between the 2 going to be? Will TVNZOnDemand do what the beehive does and post videos in 'feature articles', or use YouTube as some kind of teaser/trailer for shows (see the first half of the interview, now see the rest at TVNZOnDemand!)

TVNZ have to negotiate with content owners, and DRM was obviously part of the deal. There's not much choice for cross platform DRM. As I said before, I'm sure they'd love to have non-DRM, and have the clout of Apple. I'm sure they did look at 'all the options'. They may also be negotiating dist rights outside of NZ for certain content. It's a landscape, it's complex, it's moving (thanks to Apple).

Youtube regions have been out for a while now... nothing to do with distribution or DRM, so you are right - it is beside the point. It's basically a rudimentary filter for content and language selector.

Dilute the brand? a) reread my first point on my first post - its a pretty important model for the web - brands aren't siloed websites, b) looks pretty well branded to me, c) http://www.youtube.com/cbc http://www.youtube.com/cbs http://www.youtube.com/bbc http://www.youtube.com/nike etc etc

No idea how TVNZ plan to use it - guess time will tell... on the basis that everyone sees the Kiwi when they arrive, the page view is still pretty small. It would be interesting to see the referrer stats to the actual ondemand site.
