BlackspadeI didnt mind em really ?
But is it just me~ or is the life span off TV graphics extremely short these days, i mean they seem to change it up/rotate much more frequently.
....when I think back to the original Ch2 logo and colour schemes etc that stuck around forever
CalmeI was thinking exactly the same, with the life span of them. Didnt they make some new ones just prior to these ones?!?
I dont really mind it either, i dont watch tv enough to care i guess...
jasonI recognise that they're sticking with the whole 3-box theme they have created, and commend them for their consistency but it's too much for me. It takes up a large part of the screen unnecessarily and the animation (folding open) is distracting.
You both raise a good point about the lifespan of the graphics as well - with the changes being so often and drastic, and with in-your-face advertising beginning to appear more, viewers become unsure of where to look and what is being shown.
If found what CNNi did to be pretty interesting and a brave move
Refreshingly simple, sharp and clear - a move away from the visual busyness that TV networks often lean towards.
BarryWhile I don't mind the new TV3 graphics, they just don't seem very refined to me. They look as though they were created really quickly (which in the graphics department of a New Zealand TV network is almost certainly the case).
Maybe unrefined is the intention
The CNNi approach (cheers for introducing us to that Jason), whilst alarmingly simple, seems as though it had far more thought put into it, sure its pared back but it looks way more *designed* to my eye.
But maybe its just an aethesthic I'm particularly attracted to...
To me what they are messing with when they adopt a new visual approach is their brand. To undergo a complete change often is fine, in TV you have to continually reinvent, but the concept and treatment both really need to be compelling. Maybe they don't see it as a branding excercise, and as such don't give it the attention it fully deserves.
In my opinion its a little mis-aligned with their brand.
PeteI burst out laughing when I saw TV3's new graphic promo things, they totally reminded me of that "shard" craze with web designers in the late 90's/early 00's. You know the stuff that was rendered in 3D to look like it was a pile of crazy vectored polygons? All it needs now is some really tiny random ever changing text and a couple of 45 degree arrows.
I think Barry's correct and it does look rushed, but I suspect that this was brought on by TV1's new News look, (which even I heard about over christmas!) and CamWest wanting to attempt to steal some thunder.
Tim Di agree pete, it looks like a poor effort of that, I have a similar issue with the c4 graphics. it reminds me of stuff i used to create back when i first discovered the rectangle tool.
I have always found tv1 to have a real nice styling, and im almost starting to get used to its content, compared to the rest of the sh*te on tv these days...
apparently sky brought prime tho?
PipProd.lol at 'shard craze'.. spot on :)
the whole boxy thing actually gets me annoyed and angry at tv3, this worries me.
redesignboyI think they took the original boxed branding too literally and forgot that the brand had to be primarily about entertainment rather than just "NZ News". I think its a good fix but quite a big jump. It dosent fit well with there more serious programming.
Blackspadehey great link with The CNNi graphics!
Reminds me a little of some of the initial MTV2 UK work by DixonBaxi http://www.dixonbaxi.com/
also agree with Tim - have always like the direction TV1 has taken, +thought it was a v-nice idea to include student animation/design work in some of their promos too. :)
RuthI thought their OLD boxy stuff was boring, very passive, used to make me yawn! At least this is a little more striking. Yea, maybe a little ungraceful, but TV can be so dull, so I'm glad they're trying something a bit racey. Definately looks more youth orientated. Jason referred to it as distracting, but I prefer to look at it as attention grabbing for the moment. Although I still don't really recall the information on the shards, just the bright unfolding box. CNN have definately kept focused on delivering information.
And from a production view, I haven't been watching TV3 alot, but the unfolding box style does look a bit annoying to produce on a day to day basis, often involving a bit of tricky keying or rotoscoping, which is so unforgiving if it's not done peeerfectly... They'll probably get sick of it and move on to something easier to produce. But hey, that's cool. Evolve. Keep us entertained!
