Hi, this is my maiden post, I hope someone here can help me out. I want to try my hand at making a few fonts, but wondered if you could do this without having to pay lots of money for a program like Macromedia Fontographer. Because I am a poor student. :(
All the information I find on google points to Fontographer.

this is an interesting thought I too have started doing this and want to know how to obtain a "legal" copy of this programme, that doesn't cost the earth and an arm and a leg!

One of the tutors at my college told me about this free tool:

http://fontforge.sourceforge.net/

I think it's standalone though. I really want something to work alongside Illustrator. I'm sure if I went and bought Fontographer I would find that font design is completely tedious and I'd hardly use it. But I have a strong urge to try it.

There are a couple of open-source apps for type creation, tho I've never used them, DoubleType (which seems out of date) and FontForge.

Why not download a trial version and check out if it's worth it?

I use fontlab and prefer that over fontographer. Just a bit more user friendly. Used in conjunction with illustrator, it's really not that tedious.

Sorry if you have emailed us in the past few weeks/months, with no reply. When you work for an American company you actually have to "work". Hence no time to check FTM emails.
