The Tukutuku panels are used to tell a story and to decorate the Whare. By sending us your Tukutuku panel you are telling us your design story and adding aesthetic beauty to the interior of the For the Masses meeting house.
Your music video for Mestar's song "Secret Garden" was shown at the Otago Short Film Festival. Have you exhibited any where else?
Not yet. i will be sending it to music shows when i'm satisfied with it.
It was a video made using cutout animation. Have you done any other videos in that style, or for your band?
I've done several cutout animations. my very first one was to a piece of music by Demarnia Lloyd, which was about a man in a blue hat who eats purple fruit and goes into different dreamlands.
What styles or artists have influenced the look of your animation?
I love Maurice Sendack. His pictures look like they're moving even though they're staying still. He did quite alot of little cartoony stories which sometimes look like animation frames. Chagall has great compostion. He always knows exactly where to sick everything. And of course he is the master of dreaminess. Escher i like because all his creatures and people are so lifeless. But their environments make them come to life. Escher's a main inspiration to why my characters always have expressionless faces, it emphasizes their interaction with the world, and gives them life through their relation with world.
Would you work in 3d?
I've worked in 3d before, but not the kind of 3d which typically springs to mind. I'm trying to stay away from the glossy detailed models and shiny textures kind of stuff. I've finished two main 3d animations which both use really simple models and restricted palletes (one of them is black and white, the other has 8 colours).
Why do you animate?
I like reveling in tiny moments. Not only can you make little worlds like you do with painting, but you can also dictate every moment.
Do you think that animation is going though a revival in popularity?
I thought animation has always been popular. I don't know anyone who doesn't like animation! but things are definately exciting right now with the use of computers. I'd like to see more animators getting less hung up with the capability of their computers. You can make just as wonderful things with really simple tools.
Could New Zealand support a local version of AnimationExpress.com or Icebox.com?
I'd visit it every day.
Is the internet a good medium for the delivery of animation?
The internet been dictating animation techniques in quite a good way. Striving for small file sizes has pushed animators into vector graphics. People wouldn't be making flash animations if it wasn't for the internet. I've seen some really nice flash things lately. go and visit safeplaces.net.
